First training courses for housewives started in Mõdriku on 1 January 1927. Housewives were trained in Mõdriku School of Home Economics until 1945, and after that several agricultural specialities were taught. In 1957 the school started educating accountants and this is a speciality nowadays as well. In 1986–1994 IT specialists after basic school level were trained.

In 1998 Business Administration curriculum was introduced and the College joined Estonian-Danish Business Training Programme in the framework of PHARE project. The same year the College started admission only for secondary level graduates. Lääne-Virumaa Higher Vocational School was founded in 2001 on the basis of Mõdriku Technical School and Rakvere Pedagogical School. First accountants with higher educational diploma graduated in 2001, and first Business Administration students in 2002.

Joining of two schools added Social Work speciality, that was started in 1999 in Rakvere. In 2007 the college was renamed and became Lääne-Viru College. Commercial Economics on applied higher educational level was started in 2004. After that two vocational secondary level specialities were added: Secretarial Work in 2006 and Entrepreneurship in 2007. Starting from September 2011 the College has the speciality of Administrative Assistants and from 2013 Management of Economic Information Systems on applied higher education level.

Important Historic Data of the College

1927-1940 – Mõdriku School of Home Economics
1942 – School of Housewives was transferred from Saku to Mõdriku. It provided 6-months courses.
1944 – Mõdriku School of Home Economics restarted.
1947 – School was renamed to Mõdriku Zoology School.
1948 – School was renamed to Mõdriku Agricultural School and started to train foremen.
1952 – School was renamed to Mõdriku Agricultural Technical School and started to train zoo technicians and agronomists.

Vinni State Farm Technical School

01.09.1957 – 97 Students from Ravila and Olustvere Agricultural Technical Schools started studying at Mõdriku and so the speciality of accountancy was started.
1958 – A new students’ hostel and a dining hall were built.
1964 – Vinni State Farm and Mõdriku Agricultural Technical School were reorganised to Vinni State Farm Technical School.
1986 – The speciality of IT specialists on the basis of basic school was started.

Mõdriku Agricultural Technical School

01.01.1991 – Vinni State Farm Technical School was reorganised and Mõdriku Agricultural Technical School was founded.
1998 – Business Administration curriculum was started together with the process of transition to higher educational studies. There was no more admission based on basic educational level.

Lääne-Virumaa Higher Vocational School

01.09.2001 – Mõdriku Agricultural Technical School and Rakvere Pedagogical School were reorganised to Lääne-Virumaa Higher Vocational School. Accordingly, Social Work curriculum was started and the study building and student hostel in Rohuaia 12, Rakvere became a part of the infrastructure.
2002 – Study building G together with the library was built at Mõdriku.
2004 – Two vocational secondary curricula (Sales Management and Business Information Processing), and one higher education curriculum (Commercial Economics) were introduced.
2005 – Social Work curriculum was granted the full international accreditation. Higher education curriculum of Business IT was opened.
2006 – Accountancy and Business Administration curricula were granted the full international accreditation. A vocational secondary curriculum of Secretarial Work was opened. In-Service and Retraining Centre was opened in Rakvere.

Lääne-Viru College

03.09.2007 – The College was granted the status of state applied higher educational institution (Regulation No 103 of the Government of the Republic of 20.02.2007), and continued under the name Lääne-Viru College.
2007 – Vocational curricula of Entrepreneurship and Care Worker were opened.
2008 – Commercial Economics curriculum was granted the full international accreditation. The College was granted the first Erasmus University Charter.
2009 – A vocational curriculum of Software Engineering was opened.
2010 – As the result of transitional evaluation the Business Administration and Management study programme group was granted the right to conduct studies.
2011 – As the result of transitional evaluation the Social Services study programme group was granted the right to conduct studies. A higher education curriculum of Administrative Assistants was opened.
2012 – Business Services study programme group was granted accreditation for six years.
2013 – Commercial study programme group was granted accreditation for six years. A higher education curriculum of Business Information Systems Management was opened.
2014 – Health Care and Social Services study programme group was granted accreditation for six years.
2015 –  Information and Communication Technology study programme group was granted accreditation for three years.
